Abstract
Propolis is a resinous product, made by bees from several parts of plants, showing biological and pharmacological properties, and a potential to pharmaceutical and food industry. Caries and periodontal diseases are infectious diseases with failure to balance the oral microbiota, whose agents may be transmitted. Chlorexidine has been used as an anticarie agent, but its use is controversial due to side effects. Thus, there is a search for new products with antimicrobial action and fewer side effects. Herein, we aim to investigate not only propolis but also an antimicrobial agent (chlorexidine), as well as the association propolis/chlorexidine directly on S. mutans or the action on monocytes against this bacteria. We will determine the effect of these variables on S. mutans, determining the minimal inhibitory concentration, as well as on monocytes, evaluating the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines and the bactericidal activity of these cells. The quality of propolis or propolis/chlorexidine will be assessed regarding its stability or contamination according to the shelf time, in order to develop a pharmaceutical product, demonstrating the importance of this research project.
