Abstract

A research and technological development project, concerning to cotton breeding, is submitted to FAPESP, with main objective of obtain cultivars adapted to each of possible cotton production systems, present at the meridian planting areas of this crop in Brazil. Moreover, viewing to maintain competitiveness of the referring activity, the aimed cultivars must revert or, at least, attenuate factors of instability such as the increase and dispersion of diseases, the excessive use of pesticides and the high costs of production. For this purpose it must possess multiple disease resistance, associated with good levels regarding to the yield components and fiber quality traits, as well as plant type adequate, in each case, to the high technician producers or to the small, less advanced growers. Additionally to the conventional product, it is proposed the development of natural brown lint producer cultivars and read plant, boll weevil resistant ones, for the production of organic, pesticides free cotton, in order to offer options to small growers, mainly in the familiar agriculture.
