Abstract

In the last decade either Parkinson's disease (PD) or the so called metabolic syndrom (MS) shows a notable increment in incidence and prevalence. Both morbities were related to increasing in life span expectatives observed in many countries, including Brazil. Another aspect, with great impact on population health, is the ocurrence of dementia. In patients with PD dementia is related to age but not to disease duration. It was well demonstrated that at least for epidemiological data exists relationship between cognitive impairment and insulin metabolism disturbances, but not with hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and hypertension. There were no studies wich focuses on insulin resistence, nutricional status, and dementia in PD. The determination of risk population sub groups, for diseases like diabetes, PD and dementia is a hall mark in health policy formulation. The study propose an analysis of a population of PD patients (125) who attended to the Movement Sector of a reference hospital of a middle size town in Brazil, They were selected as with and without dementia, to be studied with determination of glicemia metabolism, and insulin, comparing with other parameters as age, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and nutricional evaluation, including basal energy spending.
