Abstract

This dissertation deals with the production of child furniture in São Paulo, Brazil, in the period between 1950 and 1960. The research intended to present an overview of the country's social, cultural and economic aspects in the first half of the 20th century, and to examine educational precepts of that time, in order to develop hypotheses that could help to understand both the place that children held in the home, and the furniture produced for their space. This work also attempted to register and analyze the production of the child's furniture and space, with no specific focused age. The adopted criteria was that the future had some kind of relation with the child either a newborn baby, a child or a teenager. The key point considered here was to analyze of what was being done for the child, and when this specific doing had occurred. Based on the research of images published in newspapers and magazines of the period, this work intended to analyze which pieces of furniture (bed, cradle, chests of drawers, wardrobes) were produced, the array of materials employed, and the design considered during their creation.
