Study of the phase transitions of the lead-free piezoceramics by mechanical spectroscopy

Abstract

Founded on the current concern about the rapid increasing of the amount of waste from electrical and electronic equipment and their recycling and safe disposal, several countries have created and implemented regulations such as the Europeans WEEE and RoHS. These legislations aim to prohibit and restrict certain hazardous substances in products, such as lead and PZT, making necessary the developing of the lead-free piezoceramics to substitute PZT applications. Bismuth-based solid solutions, as a BNT-BT and BKT-BNT-BT, are the most promising candidates to substitute for PZT, since they combine several essential features, such as a absence of (or low) toxicity, low cost, electronic and crystalline structures similar to PZT, and presence of morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). However, for their technological applications, the good understanding of the role played by the effect of dopants and chemical modifications in the properties of the bismuth ceramics is needed. The main goal of this research project is the study of phase transitions of bismuth-based lead-free piezoceramics at around MPB compositions, in which the effects of dopants and chemical modifications in the phase transitions of these materials will be analyzed by mechanical spectroscopy, using a Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) equipment. Through mechanical spectroscopy technique, it can obtain information about phase transitions and relaxation behavior of the piezoelectric ceramics, and their electromechanical characterization, which are determining factors in the possible application of these materials as piezoelectric transducers and other applications for substitutes to PZT.
