Abstract

The gummosis caused by Phytophthora spp. is one major citrus diseases in the whole world. Planting of healthy seedling is one of most important means of disease control. The LAGEM of UFSCar is one of the licensed laboratories by the Ministry of Agriculture to carried out diagnostic service for Phytophthora detection on citrus seedling, in order to comply with the state law on citrus seddling commercialization. For this reason the LAGEM holds a large collection of seedling substrates infested with this pathogen. As more than ten Phytophthora species are causal agent of citrus gummosis in Brazil it is an important issue to determine the prevalent species, if any, of the disease since reaction to fungicides and pathogenicity towards rootstock vary according to a specific species. Moreover, little information is available in Brazil on intra-specific variation of Phytophthora of citrus which is of great value for disease epidemiological studies. Therefore the present work aims to examine inter- and intra-specific variation of Phytophthora species detected in a routine diagnositc services of the laboratory. (AU)
