Abstract

The foundry industry produces a wide range of items found in various sectors of the economy. As this industry is important for the Brazilian economy, studies aiming at improving its efficiency are fundamental to ensure its competitiveness worldwide. As highlighted in the literature, one of the main factors that influences production in the sector is production planning. This project deals with the problem of production planning in small foundries, whose major decisions are: determining the alloys to be merged and which items are to be produced. Due to the diversity of alloys and items produced, this problem is challenging and since the beginning of this century academics have paid more attention to it. We will address this problem from two standpoints: theoretical and practical. From the practical point of view, our aim is to develop software to solve the problem based on academic solutions. This software must be user friendly and should provide basic training of how to use it and optimization. From a theoretical viewpoint, we address two problems. The first involves integrated production planning considering various furnaces available. In the second, we further analyze the problem of producing the orders to be delivered to the client, and develop heuristic methods regardless of commercial software for its solution. (AU)
