Abstract

Uterine sarcomas are rare tumors and can be divided in three groups: Leiomyosarcomas, endometrial stromal sarcomas and undifferentiated sarcomas. Among uterine sarcomas , leiomyosarcoma is the common one. In general they are genetically instable tumors with many cromossomal abnormalities. They are very aggressive even in early stages. The treatment consists of an association between surgery and chemo/radiotherapy, but without good responses. So, to better understand the biology of this tumor is mandatory to the improvement of treatment and to increase overall survival in these patients. Topoisomerase II alfa (TOP2A) is a molecular target for antraciclin drugs. It has been used in the treatment of some sarcomas. There are no studies addressing TOP2A protein expression and TOP2A gene status in uterine leiomyosarcomas. So, our aim is to evaluate TOP2A protein expression by immunohistochemistry and TOP2A gene status by fluorescent in situ hybridization in a series of approximately 50 uterine leiomyosarcomas treated in the last three decades in the A.C.
