Determinants of technical and economic efficiency of citrus farms in the State of São Paulo

Abstract

The aim of this research proposal is to estimate indicators of technical and economic efficiency in citrus production in the state of São Paulo, as well as identify the factors that determine these efficiencies. Primary data will be collected from a sample of 97 growers. Parametric approaches (stochastic frontier) will be used to estimate the frontiers of efficiency and to test hypotheses on the determinants of these efficiencies. Alternatively, nonparametric approaches (Data Envelopment Analysis) may be used. The proposal has wide applicability in the formulation of public policies and private strategies in order to increase the efficiency of growers. Given the absence of such a study for the activity in question and the crisis in the sector, the proposal presents innovative character and consists of a great scientific challenge. (AU)
