Abstract

Lignocellulosic residues are promptly available, becoming interesting starting materials for the production of heavy metals sorption systems in aqueous medium. From the environmental point of view this strategy is interesting because (a) it involves the reuse of a residue and (b) the end material can be used for heavy metal removal. In this project, green coconut (Cocos nucifera) whole fibers will be functionalized with thiophosphoryl chloride, Cl3P=S, and dimethylchlorothiophosphate, (CH3O)2ClP=S. The interactions of the functionalized fiber with heavy metal cations such as Cr3+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ will be followed by spectroscopic and thermoanalytical methods. (AU)
