Abstract

We intend to study, by means of DNA techniques (sequencing, RFLPs analysis and microsatellites) some of the most threatened families of birds (Psittacidae, Cracidae, Rhamphastidae) with the following aims: estimate the genetic variability in order to identify populations at risk; study the phylogenetic relationships among the genera of each of the studied families in order to identify the paleogeographic events responsible for their differentiation; establish the systematic position of the studied groups and provide pertinent information for conservation programs.
