Biochemical, entomological and molecular characterization of the interaction between digestive proteinase inhibitors and insects of the Lepidoptera order

Abstract

The present research project proposes a broad approach centered on a new strategy in the control of insect pests: the use of proteinase inhibitors. In this project, it is hoped to cover the main areas related to the subject: biochemistry, entomology and molecular biology. It entails a multi-disciplinary piece of research involving both the basic area (characterization and study of the main digestive enzymes of the insects in question), and the applied area, with the evaluation of transgenic plants expressing proteinase inhibitors and their susceptibility to the insects. The participation should be noted of a private company (Copersucar) which will collaborate on the realization of one of the proposed objectives. (AU)
