Assessment of adherence to treatment with orthosis, prostheses and auxiliary means of locomotion delivered through the OPM program

Abstract

The treatment of disabilities is often associated with prescription of orthosis, prostheses and auxiliary means of locomotion (OPMs), that are provided by the National Health System. This policy has provided better quality of life, and often, upgrading the productive environment of most of these patients. However, there is a considerable amount that does not use the equipment prescribed and dispensed. This sample represents a significant waste of public resources. The objective of this study is to survey the use of prescribed OPMs at the Rehabilitation Centre of the Clinics Hospital of Ribeirão Preto and the identification of factors that may not be related to this use. A sample of patients who received OPMs from January 2010 to December 2011 will be subject to a telephone interview and all patients still in follow-up in CER will be interviewed personally. The data will assess the level of use of OPMs and provide parameters for changing policy dispensation of OPMs seeking better use of public resources directed to persons with disabilities. (AU)
