Proinflammatory cytokines, C-reactive protein and participation of renin-angiotensin system in patients with hypertensive crisis

Abstract

Hypertensive crisis is a sudden and symptomatic increase in the arterial blood pressure with or without risk of target organ damage. Hypertensive crisis is divided into hypertensive urgency and emergency. Recent studies have shown that inflammation may be involved in the development of arterialhypertension and, consequently, it can influence the hypertensive crisis. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between hypertensive crisis, inflammatory factors and products of the renin-angiotensin system in patients with hypertensive crises treated in the emergency unit of a school hospital. Hypertensive crisiswill be considered in patients with symptomatic and sudden increase of blood pressure with diastolic levels higher than or equal to 110 mmHg. The dosage of inflammatory markers and proteins that participate in the renin-angiotensin system (angiotensin converting enzyme, renin, angiotensin II and aldosterone)will be carried out in the collectedblood samples. The descriptive analysis of qualitative variables and the results are presented as mean and standard deviation. The Student´s ttest will be used to compare the characteristics of patients with hypertensive urgency with those with hypertensive emergency for quantitative variables and the test "X2" and proportions for qualitative variables.
