Abstract

The project presented here is situated in the area of music theory and corresponds to the study of discrete groupings of musical form, specifically directed to the polyphonic repertoire of pre-European tonal music. It aims to develop analytical tools related to this field of study that are operational when directed to polyphonic simultaneity, notably imitative. It searches to treat polyphonic repertoire from a methodological strategy in which different voices are studied not only as separate melodic units or line segments, but in an integrated manner regarding aspects as metric (accentual), rhythmic (duracional), organization of tonal space, vocal contrapuntal conduction and motivic interrelationship from the historically detailed notation of the works. The theoretical challenge is to determine to what extent and in what manner it is possible to fit the pre-tonal polyphonic repertoire - considered its textural complexity - the concepts of musical form from their discrete units of groupings (which are referred to as Full Sound groupings in this research) and motivic and tematicist theory.
