Clinical evaluation of color and surface roughness of dental enamel and dental composites submitted to brushing with whitening dentifrice

Abstract

The aim of this study is to clinically evaluate the color change and surface roughness of enamel and dental composites submitted to brushing with whitening dentifrice. 30 specimens will be obtained (6 mm diameter X 2mm thick) of each composite (Z350, 3M ESPE and Tetric N-Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent). Then, the specimens will be randomly bonded on the first molars buccal surfaces (right and left sides) of 30 participants, which were selected for the study according to inclusion criteria. After specimens bonding, participants will receive dentifrice (Oral B Classic, Procter & Gamble) and non whitening dentifrice (Sorriso Dentes Brancos, Colgate-Palmolive) and also they will be instructed to use these products for 7 days (pre-trial). After that, will be realized the initial color (Easyshade, VITA) and surface roughness (Roughness Surfcorder SE 1700, Kosakalab) readings. These readings will be performed at the specimens and the enamel of the maxillary central incisor of each participant. In order to reading the surface roughness, moldings of the teeth and the specimens bonded will be taken (Elite HD Zhermack) and subsequently, casts of polyurethane resin will be obtained (Axon F16, Abcol) so readings will performed on the incisor and samples replica. After baseline measurements, participants will be divided into 3 groups (n=10), according to the whitening dentifrice used: Group 1) Non whitening dentifrice, control (Sorriso Dentes Brancos); Group 2) Whitening dentifrice (Colgate Luminous White, Colgate-Palmolive); and Group 3) Whitening dentifrice with fast action (Close up White Now, Unilever). The readings for analysis of whitening dentifrice action will be taken after 7, 30 and 90 days. The final results (readings before and after test periods) will be statistically analyzed and used to calculate the color stability and surface roughness. (AU)
