Scientia Agricola

Abstract

A special issue of Scientia Agricola will be published containing articles related to the use of the sugarcane trash left on the soil after harvest without burning. All manuscripts - evaluated by peer reviewers and the editorial committee - are derived from a BIOEN workshop which took place in Campinas in May 2013. There is much debate on this topic: the trash has important functions for nutrient recycling, soil protection, to increase soil organic matter content, carbon sequestration etc.. Excess trash can also cause problems (budding, increased pests, increased emission of greenhouse gases). Furthermore, the trash is a raw material for the production of energy, both in traditional (burning in boilers) and the emerging second generation of ethanol. Ten articles were approved, which will join an Editorial and an article with the sugar and ethanol industry perspectives. This subject is controversial not only in Brazil, for reasons listed above, but also abroad, especially in issues concerning the environmental impact. The choice of Scientia Agricola was because this journal is published in English (to reach an international audience interested in the subject) and have one of the best impact factors among Brazilian journals of agricultural science. Articles from Scientia Agricola are available at the libraries of many institutions and also for free download in the internet (AU)
