Daily life first century Palestine according Flávio Josefo

Abstract

The works of Flávio Josefo (c. 37-100 AD) are the major source for the knowledge of the social, political and mental structures of the first century Palestine. Among them stands out the Jewish War, considered the most important document of the period outside the bible, enlarging and enriching the information is documented in the new testament. In Jewish war, Josefo describes, in detail, the Roman strategy towards the crisis in Palestine, involving different groups of Jews, between (66 and 73 BC), and which culminated in the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple, the main symbol of judaism, causing a broad diaspora movement among Jews. Despite being considered, a controversial author with a world that requires numeric and chronological revisions and precautions regarding too biased information is that joints history and fiction, Flávio Josefo is an important witness of his time. This thesis propones to critically evaluate the Josefo contribution to a better understanding of the political social and metal. (AU)
