Abstract

The fluoride ion (F) comes trom the element fluorine and its absorption occurs tract gastrointestinal. After its absorption, F is distributed to the tissues through the bloodstream and stored in calcified tissues and soft tissues. This is an extremely relevant in terms of public health, due to its properties to prevent or reverse cáries in individuais of ali ages. However, excessive intake can affect bone metabolism, as well as the development of tooth enamel. Studies have shown that administration of a single dose of 40 micromol F/100g of body weight of Sprague Dawley rats induced reduction in plasma insulin levels, with a consequent increase in glucose levels. On the other hand, in a study with Wistar rats on chronic (F) in water (5 or 50 ppmF), there was no significant change in blood glucose, or the insulin. These discrepant results may perhaps be explained by genetic differences between the strains used. A/J mice are susceptible to treatment with F, whereas the mice 129P3/J are highly resistant to the effects of this ion. Based on the above, we intend to investigate whether these animais show different responses in parameters related to insulin resistance. (AU)
