Abstract

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in the world and in developing countries it is the leading cause of cancer mortality in women. The invasive cervical carcinoma (ICC) is connected, except in rare exceptions, to the persistent infection by human papilloma virus (HPV). In most cases, the HPV infection is asymptomatic, but in a small percentage of infected individuals, several degrees of lesions arise preceding cervical carcinoma. Currently there are over 100 known types of HPV and 40 of them infect the genital tract. The types that infect the genital tract are divided into two groups, low and high risk. The low-risk normally lead to the appearance of warts and do not cause lesions (such as HPV types 6 and 11).The high-risk types can cause lesions which potentially lead to the onset of cancer (such as types 16 and 18). The integration of the HPV genome to the human genome is a fundamental step in carcinogenesis. After the integration, genes from the HPV E6 and E7 proteins are overexpressed. These oncoproteins, in turn, act as mediators in the cancer onset leading to cell immortalization. Although the recent progress in research on high-risk HPVs, there is no adequate therapy for the treatment of injuries and cancer caused by this virus. This study aims to understand the structural differences between the E6 protein from high- and low-risk HPVs through bioinformatics analysis with a focus on the intrinsic disorder associated with this protein.
