Obtainment of nanostructured semiconductors: correlation of the photocatalytic properties to their structural characteristic

Abstract

The nanostructured semiconductor materials have attracted great scientific and technological interest, not only for its great potential applications, but also by studying the correlations of their properties to their physical and chemical aspects. Among their range of application, studies related to nanostructured semiconductors with high performance in heterogeneous photocatalysis can be highlighted. From several potential semiconductors for this application, the vanadates and their heterostructures formed with TiO2 or SnO2, besides the TiO2 nanostructures doped with transition metals can be pointed out. In this way, this project aims a systematic study for obtaining nanostructured semiconductors with high photoanalyical performance, aligned to a fundamental study aiming to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the prepared samples. The nanostructures will be synthesized by the method of oxidant peroxides under hydrothermal conditions, which is considered promising due to the possibility of obtaining nanostructures in a simpler way, and without the need to employ solvents and/or surfactants, which may interfere in the properties of the materials studied. The morphology, physical and chemical properties, and structural properties of the as-obtained nanostructures will be initially evaluated through conventional technique, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence spectroscopy, superficial area (BET method), and advanced techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Photocatalytic efficiency tests will be carried out using radiation in wavelength at the visible and ultraviolet spectrum, thus observing the degradation of organic molecules. (AU)
