Abstract

Penile carcinoma (PeCa) represents an important public health problem in poor and developing countries. Brazil presents one of the highest incidence rates worldwide of this disease. The etiology and many aspects of the pathophysiology of PeCa are still poorly elucidated. To date there are few data on the molecular and epigenetic mechanisms reported in the literature. Using large-scale techniques, our laboratory recently identified genes that can be involved in the development and progression of PeCa. Interestingly, a subset of these genes is known to be important for cytoskeleton reorganization, cell motility and invasive migration. To evaluate the role of these genes during metastasis, we established five different cell lines from PeCa samples. The first step of our project is to characterize the motility and invasive migratory potential of the five PeCa cell lines. Once this is achieved, the role of the genes identified in the large scale data analysis will be tested for their role in metastasis in the PeCa cell lines. (AU)
