Abstract

Endometrial polyps are structures formed by glands and stroma originated of the endometrial tissue. Far from being completely elucidated, several hormonal, biochemical and genetic factors take part in the pathogenesis of the endometrial polyps. With the increasing use of ultrassound as a routine exam in gynecology, this entity is being more frequently diagnosed. The importance of the endometrial polyps lies in the fact that they can cause symptoms, especially abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility, but also in their potential of malignization. In this study, samples of endometrial polyps will be obtained from polyps removed hysteroscopically from postmenopausal patients, and in those will be analyzed markers of genetic expression involved in cell proliferation, apoptosis and tissue differentiation, that are known to have a role in the pathogenesis of endometrial cancer. The expression of such markers will then be compared between patients with and without symptoms, characterized by postmenopausal bleeding. Therefore, the present study is important to enlighten such physiopatological aspects and assist in the clinical decision. (AU)
