Abstract

Constructed wetlands present advantages over traditional processes of water treatment, combining low installation costs and operational simplicity. Their application for industrial wastewater treatment has not accompanied, however, the increased use of these systems for domestic effluents, which occurred in recent decades. One of the reasons for the resistance to their use is the set of uncertainties surrounding the functional limits of these systems, especially regarding a possible collapse against excessive loads. The Project proposed here addresses the collapse parameterization, through the assembly and operation of pilot systems of vertical upward flow constructed wetlands, and of its behavior against a progression of oily loads in the water. As elements of parameterization, are considered the attenuation capacity of oil load, and methane generation. The project also considers the training of undergraduate students, contributing to the reduction of the shortage of specialized professionals, one of the obstacles to the installation and operation of these systems, in order to stay beside with the growth of this kind of application in the global scenario.
