Abstract

Obesity in children and adolescents has grown at an alarming rate and has presented epidemic features worldwide. Arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, Diabetes Mellitus type 2, osteoarticular diseases, neoplasia and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are some morbidities associated with obesity, which have led to higher mortality at increasingly early ages. Many mechanisms of obesity and obesity-associated morbidities are based on the inflammatory response, and they have been recently associated with the presence of anti-adenovirus IgG antibodies (AdV-36). Therefore, this study was designed to comprehend the cytokine profile associated with inflammatory M1 macrophages in different degrees of obesity in adolescents, and to evaluate the presence of IgG anti-AdV-36 in that same population. The aim is to understand the inflammatory mechanisms of obesity during adolescence, and to verify if previous infections by AdV-36 could lead to distinct inflammatory responses, or be associated with the presence of metabolic syndrome as well as to any clear signs associated with it. Determination of cytokines could lead to new perspectives of studies on the understanding of inflammatory macrophages in obesity and in its different levels, providing the basis to determine the inflammatory markers associated with Mets.
