Abstract

Prof. Michiel de Vries, who has extensive research experience on the theme of local government, will play the role of an international evaluator of the research project "Improving Osasco's Strategic Planning". He will analyze the research proposal through the lens of recent research developments on local government, public management and public policy, with the goal of identifying aspects to be improved in three research components, as well as pointing out possible future research projects. One of the issues of discussion during the visit will be the relation between academic and applied research, such as possible conflicts between political and academic goals, leading to the examination of strategies to overcome constraints and reconcile goals. Another topic of discussion will be the procedures to disseminate the research's results in international academic journals. In this regard, we should point out that Prof. De Vries has been a speaker in seminars on how to improve academic manuscripts for publication in international journals. The International Association of Schools and Institutions of Administration - IASIA - an institution based in Brussels that Prof. De Vries currently chairs -, plans to install a permanent project with this same purpose, which will count with the collaboration of renowned academics in the field of Public Administration. Within the goal of enhancing the international integration of Unifesp's research group members, Prof. De Vries will talk about the opportunities for international research projects through IASIA's permanent working groups, which meet annually during the association's conferences. The visit will also serve as an opportunity to enhance the international participation of other researchers of the state of São Paulo. With this purpose in mind, one of the activities of the visit will be a seminar open to academics and graduate students doing research in the field of Public Administration. Invitations will be sent to the Intercampus Center for Studies on Public Policy - NEIPP/UNIFESP, the Federal University of the ABC, the Universi-ty of São Paulo - USP, the State University of São Paulo - Unesp, the Getúlio Vargas Foundation, and the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning - CEBRAP.
