Abstract

The research project “Covalent ceramics production process development (hexagonal boron nitride and aluminum nitride) by hot pressing (isostatic and uniaxial) as component for the BPM Sensor (Beam Position Monitor) Sirius Project” fits into the technological effort to the development of one device that must be inserted on the new Sincrotron, and proposes the route development for processing dense covalent ceramics, made on hexagonal boron nitride and aluminum nitride. BPM sensor comprises metallic components with controlled thermal expansion coefficients joined to a ceramic element which acts as a mechanical (between vacuum and atmosphere) and electrical (between tapered pin and housing) and moreover as a thermal conductor (heat exchange between pin and housing). Due to technical specifications defined for the sensor hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), aluminum nitride (AIN), and alumina (Al2O3) are promising ceramic materials to the application, because of the electrical and thermal properties conjunction of these materials. As alumina is a material commercially well known, including the proponent company knowledge, the proposed project involves the technological effort for developing hot pressing process (HP and HIP) of hBN and AIN ceramics. According to a preliminary survey there are not the commercial fabrication of ceramic components by hot pressing process in Brazil, notedly covalent ceramic components. Using this technique to commercial production purposes is shown therefore relevant to knowledge absorption, representing a technological challenge to proponent company. Thereby the aim of the project is ceramic bodies prototypes production that must be a part for BPM sensor, made on hBN and AINm respecting the dimensional requirements (cotes and tolerances). Final result expected is the production of these prototypes which will be sent for brazing specific metallic materials tests, by means of constitute the BPM sensor body fir operational tests in ultra high vacuum.
