Abstract

The research project aims to develop a fault location method in distribution networks using parallel computing and graph theory. In order to locate the fault point, the method use voltage and current phasors measurements from the network terminals. It is considered yet, the existence of distributed generation units installed at the network terminals.The proposed fault location method searches for the fault point by analysing all the distribution network sections that, usually, are in great amount. Therefore, by using parallel programming, the search is carried out in several network sections at the same time in order to reduce the fault location time. Furthermore, the graph theory is used once it facilitates the nodal admitance matrix, which represents the distribution network matematically, building and changing.By using the ATP/EMTP software, the proposed method is validated under several operative conditions, such as: load level and faults, which may be of several types, with different resistance, and occur in any distribution feeder section. Furthermore, the method is validated by considering deviations in the feeders parameters and voltage and current phasors. (AU)
