Abstract

The Workshop ´Applied Meta-ecology´ will take place in Ilhabela from 13 to 19 March 2016 with a selection of 24 participants from Brazil, Argentina, USA, Canada, France and Finland including some leading authors in the field, and established and promising young researchers working on applied ecology. The workshop will follow a format designed for optimal catalysis and complementarity in discussing the connections between meta-ecology and relevant applied topics such as land use change, agriculture and ecosystem services; conservation biology, conservation policy; restoration; fisheries, hunting and collection; biological invasions; climate change; environmental pollution; disease ecology and human health. Ahead of the workshop, the organizing committee will conceive and suggest tentative discussion groups based on proposed contributions, research interest keywords and CVs. This information, combined with key selected papers from each participant, will be circulated in advance to allow us to know each other before the workshop. The workshop will be divided in two phases. In the first phase (days 1-3) we will discuss, conceive and prepare an advanced outline of a general overview paper about the connections between the theory of meta-ecology and applied topics (as well as the most appropriate methods to approach these connections). In the second phase (days 4-5) we will follow on and discuss, conceive and prepare outlines for several specific papers considered promising in the first phase (for example, we envision deepening our analyses on one paper about the connections between meta-ecology, land use planning and biological conservation). Most of the dynamics of the meeting will be based on group work (3-6 people) interspersed with inter-group exchange for combining effective, progressive construction of target deliverables with broad exchange of ideas.
