Abstract

The current proposal requests financial support for Dr. David McKenzie, a CNRS researcher from Montpellier, France, to maintain a research collaboration with Prof. F. Tadeu Rantin at the Department of Physiological Sciences, UFSCar, São Carlos, for a period of 4 months. The general objective is to investigate why individuals within animal species exhibit wide variation in complex physiological traits of respiratory metabolism and performance. This project will focus on fishes, and investigate two hypotheses regarding the ecological and evolutionary significance of variation in metabolic rate and cardiorespiratory performance. The first study investigates the hypothesis that the metabolic rate and aerobic metabolic scope of individuals within fish species can influence their capacity to tolerate thermal and hypoxic stresses, within a context of ongoing climate change. The study will represent the initiation of a PhD project for Felipe Rocco Blasco, at UFSCar, under the co-supervision of Drs. Rantin and McKenzie. The second study investigates the hypothesis that the metabolic rate of individuals, within an air-breathing fish species, can influence collective risk-taking behavior: the phenomenon of synchronous air-breathing. The study will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Shaun Killen of the University of Glasgow, Scotland, within a Royal Society International Exchange project with Dr. Rantin. The studies will be prepared as manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. (AU)
