Abstract

Accelerometry is considered the gold standard method to assess physical activity level. However, there is no standardization of its use in hospitalized patients. Objectives: 1) To test the calibration of the accelerometer to detect different intensities activities in hospitalized patients by indirect calorimetry; 2) To compare the accuracy of accelerometry made in the wrist and waist of hospitalized patients; 3) Evaluate the minimum time (in days) required of accelerometry to estimate the level of physical activity of hospitalized patients. Methods: 130 patients not bedridden, consecutively admitted to a ward at a university will be assessed. Initially, 20 patients performing routine tasks within a hospital setting using a portable calorimeter and two accelerometers, one placed on the wrist of the dominant and the other at the waist. In addition, 110 patients will use two accelerometers, one in the grip of the dominant member and the other at the waist, for 7 consecutive days in normal hospital routine. kilocalories, metabolic equivalent, steps count, time in inactivity and in different intensities (light, daily, moderate and severe) of acitvity will be analyzed. To compare the calibration of calorie expenditure in each activity of different intensities at each location accelerometry and calorimetry with the software of the curves will be used ANOVA. To determine the best accelerometer placement site, the variables recorded in the wrist and waist are compared by paired t test. To determine the minimum sufficient time to properly assess the level of physical activity, the average of all recorded variables are compared by one-way ANOVA and the correlation between the days will be calculated by the intraclass correlation coefficient.
