Abstract

Dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome is characterized by hyperferritinemia, normal serum iron and transferrin saturation associated with mild hepatic overload. This syndrome is reported in 30% of obese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and causes a metabolic and histologic worse prognosis. Objective: Analyze non-invasive methods to identify patients with liver iron deposit. Patients and Methods: Forty patients with NAFLD and hyperferritinemia already undergoing liver biopsy will be selected. Patients will be evaluated by metabolic and inflammatory profile, serum hepcidin, distribution of the subunits of ferritin and iron liver pattern in MRI. The data will be compared between patients with and without iron identified on liver biopsy. (AU)
