Abstract

The project aims at describing and analyzing the contexts in which names and nicknames are assigned and activated among the indigenous peoples inhabiting the upper Rio Negro region, by means of discussing the radical division between the domestic sphere and the political-ritual one. The hypothesis to be set is that the nomination process is the basis for grouping production processes and determine the variable form of these collectives.The character of the reflection is mostly comparative, to the extent that the project is part of a team of researchers. Thereby, the intention is to keep on with the previous investigations on social life of indigenous peoples, whose main issue is the case of the dynamics of creation, updating and transformation of units and subunits that make up the extensive regional social system, i.e. the continuous production of inside differences in a large multiethnic and multilingual set. Among the topics to be highlighted, it lies the close relationship of this great variability with naming processes, especially through the repetition of ceremonial names and the proliferation of nicknames that, in combination, allow the existence of people and groups extremely heterogeneous among each other.
