Abstract

Osteoporosis is the only complication of liver cirrhosis that persists even after liver transplantation. It is a common complication among cirrhotic patients, increasing the risk of fractures and thus affecting morbidity and mortality rates. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are needed to avoid fractures and disability. The treatment requires nutritional supplementation of calcium and vitamin D combined with an anti-reabsortive drug as biphosphonates. In spite of the potential benefits that could be achieved by these drugs, oral biphosphonates can lead to upper digestive mucosal damage, which is a particular concern because cirrhotic patients often have esophageal varices. Therefore, the safety of this approach must be properly appraised in this population. In this study, the risk of upper digestive mucosal damage during oral risedronate treatment will be evaluated in cirrhotic patients who have esophageal varices and osteoporosis. The endoscopic findings will be evaluated through time, and the efficacy of this drug on bone mass will be also assessed. (AU)
