Abstract

Amblyopia is an important cause of visual loss around the world. Visual tracking tests aim to detect amblyogenic risk factors and, consequently, institute an early treatment, which has the possibility to reach better visual results. In our current scenario of visual tracking, photoscreeners have gained visibility as practical, portable and fast instruments, which demand very little cooperation of children during the evaluation, being, therefore, efficient instruments in detecting risk factors related to amblyopia, especially in small and uncollaborative children. Nowadays, the American Academy of Pediatrics stimulates the development of studies that evaluate the efficacy, the validity of results and the costs on using these instruments as tracking devices and, if possible, propose viable strategies to prevent amblyopia using these new technologies. If it is proved that the photoscreening methods can offer precision in their results when compared to conventional manual tests, they could become the principal method in screening programs in children between 6 months and 3 years old. Since there are no studies in the literature that evaluate results of these instruments among groups of similar ages, this project aims to evaluate the precision of the photoscreener device comparing to conventional methods of visual screening in children between 6 months and 3 years of age.
