Flora of Brazil: Elaeocarpaceae Juss.

Abstract

This study has the general objective to contribute to the Flora of Brazil, which is part of the targets established by the Conference of the Parties of the Convention's signatory countries on Biological Diversity. The development of the Brazilian Flora is coordinated by the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment of Brazil and with national and international research institutions. In order to contribute with this project, current research has as specific goals the floristical study survey of the species of Elaeocarpaceae that occur in Brazil and the elaboration of a flora to the family, with identification key, descriptions of genera and species, taxonomic comments and geographical distribution of each taxon. Project's execution will be based on the species survey through specialized bibliography; field expeditions, in order to collect and observe the species in their natural environment; the analysis of the general collections and the nomenclatural types deposited in the main national and foreign herbaria. About 50 species of Elaeocarpaceae for Brazil were already recognized but it is believed that this number is underestimated. In this sense, this project will bring an important contribution to the knowledge of the Eleacarpaceae and also to Brazil's Flora Project, in addition to providing data for the preparation of the phylogeny of the genus Sloanea. As a final result, it is expected the publication of two scientific papers in journals of international circulation as well as the publication of the family within the Brazilian Flora and World Flora.
