Abstract

The progression of science relies on both innovative instrumentation and meticulous interpretation of data. My research comprises both of these approaches, which will be essential to the success of the BINGO project. BINGO is a radio telescope of novel design to be built in Uruguay. BINGO's ultimate aim is to be the first instrument to measure Baryon Acoustic Oscillations using redshifted hydrogen emission, which is an important and sensitive probe of the Universe's cosmological parameters. It will be an important path-finder to identify the BAO research that can be done with the Square Kilometre Array, and to test the analysis techniques that can be used to extract the BAO signal from the data. Important by-products of the BINGO survey will include very sensitive maps of Galactic emission through several different emission mechanisms. Through this fellowship, I will work three interlinked themes. I will work on the testing of the receivers for the BINGO telescope throughout the process of constructing and commissioning the telescope in 2016-17, and simulations and data analysis of the telescope observations in 2017-19; I will also lead the analysis of the Galactic science that will be seen by BINGO as a by-product of its ultimate aim to map Baryon Acoustic Oscillations. This will enable us to better understand the synchrotron and free-free emission from our Galaxy, which will both provide interesting Galactic astrophysics, particularly in the Galactic Haze region, and will help improve the subtraction of these foregrounds from CMB data. Ultimately, the BINGO project will work towards the first detection of BAOs through the intensity mapping technique, which will provide insight into the cosmological properties of dark energy, responsible for the increasing expansion rate of our Universe.
