Abstract

The acquisition of reading and writing has an impact on phonological processing, with effects including the neurofuncionnal organization for these skills. On the other hand, national and international literature has shown that the proper functioning of phonological processing skills guarantee the success of reading development. The better the overlap between phonological and orthographic representations, the better the performance in reading and writing. This study aims to characterize the influence of reading acquisition in phonological processing and visual processing in adults (Study I), and in children (Study II). To investigate these issues, experimental tasks on perception of phonological stimuli and visual stimuli (linguistic and non-linguistic) will be presented. Comparison of literate participating groups and non-literate can show which of these skills depend on reading abilities and which are influenced by this acquisition. The hypothesis is that learning to read strengthens the relationship between auditory and visual information, or more specifically the relationship between phonology and spelling, changing the nature of the perception of linguistic stimuli.
