Abstract

During the last decade, a growing body of evidence indicates that the upper, ionized, part of the atmosphere - namely the ionosphere - is sensitive to perturbations generated by large earthquakes and tsunamis. In a recent study of the large 2011 Japan tsunami, we reported on the presence of tsunami-induced Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances detected ahead of the tsunami wave front. This kind of precursory signal could therefore contribute to the development of a tsunami early-warning system. In this proposal, we aim at developing an integrated simulation and observational approach in order to quantitatively relate the early-observed ionospheric signal to the tsunami amplitude. A complete magneto-hydrodynamic model is under development with financial support from FAPESP since 2012. We propose a collaborative framework to gather and reproduce by simulation both airglow data, GPS-derived electron content and geomagnetic field observations related to three recent tsunami events, geomagnetic field observations related to three recent tsunami events.
