EVALUATION OF TREATMENT OF DOGS PRESENTING CHRONIC MITRAL VALVE DEGENERATION STAGE C WITH CONVENTIONAL THERAPY ASSOCIATED WITH AMLODIPINE VERSUS CONVENTIONAL THERAPY AND PLACEBO

Abstract

Abstract: Chronic Mitral Valve Degeneration is the most frequently diagnosed cardiovascular condition in dogs. Much research has been done concerning its treatment in the past few decades, however few of them have involved amlodipine, a drug often used in the treatment of this condition, despite the lack of scientific evidence to support its use. The theoretical principle of the prescription of this drug in patients with chronic mitral valve disease is the reduction of afterload, which can decrease the regurgitant fraction and, consequently, volume overload for both the atrium and the left ventricle. The goal of the present study is to evaluate the use of amlodipine in dogs with chronic mitral valve degeneration stage C (classification according to ACVIM 2009), regarding the time until the next event of pulmonary edema, the short-term survival, the clinical response and the echocardiographic variables. A prospective, double-blind, randomized clinical study will be conducted. Twenty animals will be studied, and they will be divided into two groups of 10 animals each, which will be treated with furosemide, spironolactone, pimobendam and enalapril, besides placebo or amlodipine. Student T test or Mann-Whitney test will be performed to compare mean values, and values of p <0.05 will be considered significant. (AU)
