Decision support system for late blight management in tomato

Abstract

The most destructive tomato and potato disease is late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans. Late blight attacks the aerial part of the plant, mainly destroying the leaves, and can decimate a crop in a few days if environmental conditions are favorable, and if appropriate control measures are not used quickly. Late blight causes damage through reduction in productivity when the pathogen attacks and destroys the culture. It are also the cause of increased production costs, because it requires frequent fungicide sprays. Consequently, there is also exposure of crop workers, consumers and the environment to chemicals. The aim of this project is to develop a sensing system to assist decision making about the best time to apply fungicide. A sensor will capture data on temperature and humidity at the site, sending the collected data to a mobile device. Through an application, the user can access data as well as a prediction if the disease can occur in the next period. The expected result is a quick and easy disease management system that will assist producers to decide the best time to start disease control. It can avoid unnecessary sprays, reducing costs for the producer and reducing the risks of occurrence of severe epidemics and environmental pollution. (AU)
