Reliability of a sleep time questionnaire in South American children and adolescents: the SAYCARE study.

Abstract

Background: In recent years, there has been an increased generation of sleep time questionnaires. However, only a few of them have been standardized (reliable measures) and validated. Objective: To assess the reliability of the South American Youth Cardiovascular and Environmental (SAYCARE) sleep time questionnaire in children and adolescents. Methods: Children (N=41) and adolescents (N=106) aged 3-18 years from seven South American citiesparticipated in the SAYCARE study. Sleep time and routine were reported by the questionnaire twice, two weeks apart. Wake-up time, bedtime, siesta time, night sleep time, sleep period (through the equation: bedtime - wakeup) and total sleep time (through the equation: sleep time + siesta night time) were reported. Data were recorded and stratified for week and weekend days, and the total days' data were calculated. Reliability analysis was performed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and kappa (k) agreement. Results: In children, only bedtime (ICC and k d0.35) and sleep period (ICC and k d 0.02) on weekend days and total days exhibited low reliability. Conversely, in adolescents, wake-up time (ICC or k e 0.62), siesta time (ICC or k e 0.45) and sleep period (ICC and k e 0.45) showed acceptable reliability. Conclusion: The SAYCARE questionnaire is a reliable tool to measure sleep time in South American youth.
