Abstract

Cataract is an opacification of the crystalline lens that leads the person to present a significant loss of the vision. Unfortunately, this disease is the cause of 47.8% of blindness in the world. Its treatment is performed by removing the affected crystalline lens and replacing it by an intraocular lens (IOL). To choose the proper IOL to be used in the surgery, some parameters of the eye must be measured, such as the curvature of the cornea, the axial length of the eye, the thickness of the crystalline, among others. Although some products available are capable of measuring these structures of the eye, only two of them can make all the measurements together, which reduces the error in the determination of the IOL. Nowadays, the leading products in the market are the IOL Master 700, produced by Carls Zeiss Meditec®, and the Lenstar LS 900, produced by Haag-Streit®. The IOL Master 700 offers great results for IOL calculation, but uses swept source to perform the biometry of the eye, which makes it an expensive equipment. On the other hand, the Lenstar LS 900 is cheaper than the IOL Master 700, but performs the exams more slowly, what can be uncomfortable for both equipment user and patient. In order to keep the advantages of both products, i.e., merging low price with fast measurements, we propose the development of an equipment that uses videokeratometry, Scheimpflug principle and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the parameters necessary to determine the IOL. The unification of these three methods has never been observed in any equipment available, justifying the innovation of the project. With the development of this equipment, we expect to reduce considerably its final cost, since the methods are simple and well established in the literature. Therefore, with reduced cost and low exam time with low measurement error, we will contribute to the reduction in the number of patients without cataract treatment. (AU)
