School materiality culture and the Natural Science teaching history in São Paulo: a transdisciplinary approach

Abstract

This project consists on a historic investigation about the Natural Science teaching in São Paulo, between 1880 and 1971. Taking into account the Science teachers Elementary School Graduation, the research and the study of the history of the Science teaching are still incipient. That is the reason why it is necessary systematizing knowledge about the issue and advancing on the understanding of an object little analyzed by the Brazilian educational history. Analyzing the documentation of the Normal School of São Paulo and the Gymnasium of the Capital, it is interesting to think, on the one hand, the investment of the São Paulo government in the materials for the teaching of Natural Sciences; and, on the other hand, the uses and pedagogical practices developed within the school, from such materials. So, besides the objects themselves, sources will be analyzed as part of the furniture of the studied schools; receipts; customs clearance of boats attesting the material importation; crafts and correspondences of requesting such materials, teaching manuals, catalogues and ads of material producers, among others. The methodological procedure is based on the confrontation of the different kinds of sources, highlighting which objects were acquired and the commercial and the administrative procedures they were led to the school. It is also interesting to notice the pedagogical practices, the proposals of the teaching manuals, the usage trades on the objects that still are on the collection, the appropriation indications. Finally, the research contribution is directed to the understanding of how it has configured the learning-teaching process of this knowledge area between us, in the delimited period, such as the construction of a school culture in relation to the Natural Science teaching in São Paulo.
