Abstract

The identification of factors that affect individuals' financial well-being is a current and relevant topic in consumer behavior, behavioral finance, and economic psychology literatures. Among the multiple causes that have been identified as antecedents of financial well-being, the following three are of high importance: financial literacy, materialism and temporal orientation. In this sense, this research project aims to examine the relationships between these constructs through the following three objectives: a) to evaluate the direct effects of financial literacy, materialism and temporal orientation on financial well-being; b) to evaluate the moderating effect of financial literacy on the relationship between materialism and financial well-being; and c) to evaluate the moderating effect of financial literacy on the relationship between temporal orientation and financial well-being. As for the methodological aspect, the project is divided into three phases: in the first, efforts will be directed towards the validation of measures in the context of the study; in the second, a national survey will be conducted with about 800 respondents in order to test the research hypotheses; in the third, experiments will be conducted to analyze the causal relationships between the abovementioned constructs. We expect to provide contributions of a theoretical, methodological and substantive nature that will favor the elaboration of more effective intervention strategies in the promotion of the individuals' financial well-being.
