Abstract Thrombocytopenia is one of the most common hematological disturbances in dogs and may occur in several diseases. The bone marrow analysis is current utilized for evaluation of thrombopoiesis, but the reticulated platelets has been reported as a thrombopoiesis marker. Reticulate platelets are young platelets that are usually evaluated by flow cytometry and may be useful in determining the etiology of multifactorial thrombocytopenia in complex diseases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the reticulated platelet importance as a thrombopoiesis marker in regenerative and nonregenerative thrombocytopenic conditions. Blood samples and bone marrow cytology will be obtained from 30 healthy dogs (control group), 15 thrombocytopenic dogs (< 100.000 platelets/uL) with a variety of disorders without megakaryocytic hypoplasia and 15 thrombocytopenic dogs (< 100.000 platelets /uL) with megakaryocytic hypoplasia. The blood samples will be collected to obtain the platelet rich plasma and the quantification of reticulated platelets by flow cytometry. Megakaryocytes will be quantified by bone marrow aspiration cytology and then they will be correlated with reticulated platelets counts. | |
