Abstract

The purpose of the present research is to investigate some aspects of maternal behavior after birth, including indicators of attachment as a function of the presence or absence of postnatal depression, and features of the upbringing story of the mother. A sample of 80 mothers of newborn babies will be interviewed at the maternity ward of the Hospital Universitário da Universidade de São Paulo, during their stay there after birth. A semi-structured interview will be carried out with the mothers, n addition to to the following instruments: Edinburgh Postnatal Depression, Martin Brune’s Questionnaire on Nurturing Practices Followed by Parents, Bartholomew and Horowitz’ Relationship Questionnaire, and a questionnaire aimed at getting information about the choice of names for the children and resemblance attribution. We hold the hypothesis that the criteria used to choose the name of the child and the attribution of resemblance aim at enhancing paternity, thus raising the likelihood of the fathers investing on the newborn.
