Abstract

Nocturnal enuresis is one of the most common childhood problems, affecting around 10% of seven year-old children. Although related to genetic aspects, enuresis is caused by three major difficulties: the child not being able to wake when his/her bladder is full; the abnormal high urine production during sleep; and bladder instability. The urine alarm is the most effective treatment for enuresis, assembled in the child’s bed or clothes during the night, awakening the child when wetting starts. The child obtains control in order to avoid being awakened by the alarm, in a process called active avoidance. Some variables can interfere in the process, such as parents’ educational level, initial frequency of wet nights, daytime urinary symptoms, alarm type and the way therapeutic instructions are administered. This work’s objective is to verify how these variables affect enuresis treatment, when adapted to the Brazilian reality, as it has been developed in the last years by Projeto Enurese, at Instituto de Psicologia of Universidade de São Paulo. The alarm treatment will be administered to 70 children with ages from 6 to 18 years-old, according to the full spectrum model. There will be three treatment moments, each one with different participants, to establish the influence of each variable in the participants’ results and speed which these results are obtained. To guarantee data quality, there will be comparisons with control groups and statistical analysis of the collected data.
