Abstract

The mitochondria, besides the ability to generate adenosine 5’-phosphate via oxidative phosphorylation, is part of signaling pathways of apoptosis. Rho zero cells (mitochondrial DNA depleted cells) have a important contribution to growing understanding of mitochondria in these signaling pathways. Recently, one study developed with bovine zygotes submitted to an extraction of 50% of mitochondria-enriched cytoplast fraction (MECF) showed no interfere on embryo development rates. This model was developed with zygote centrifugation after in vitro fertilization (IVF), extraction of MECF before introducing 20-30% ooplast. Based on the knowledge that depleted zygotes allows embryo development to blastocyst, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of mitochondrial depletion and supplementation in zygote to clarify the importance of mitochondria in the programmed cell death during embryogenesis.
