Abstract

The aim of this project is the fabrication of microchannels in different materials (glass, polymers, CDs,..) and architectures (series and/or parallel) to optimize a configuration that allows future work in the fabrication of interdigitated electrodes inside the channels for an upcoming integration with an electronic tongue under development. The final purpose is the fabrication of a “tongue-on-a-chip” sensor. Up to date there is nothing similar in the literature, and having in mind the potential of application of both devices (electronic tongue and lab-on-a-chip) this project becomes an important unification key to the development of a new technology with a strong commercial demand. As the microchannel fabrication involves equipments and techniques of lithography that we do not have in our labs, we intend to extend the ongoing collaborations with Laboratorio Nacional de Luz Sincroton (LNLS – submitting a project specific in this research field) and Prof. Cleber R. Mendonça from Instituto de Física de São Carlos/USP (to alternatively try the microchannel fabrication using a high energy laser) to make this project possible. It s the first time that microfluidics will be applied in electronic tongue devices, and to that it will be necessary a detailed work to get the best conditions involved in the microchannels fabrication, envisaging fast and efficient measurements, allowing the posterior fabrication of interdigitated electrodes inside the channels for data acquisition. Besides the reduction in volume of the analysed samples, there are also advantages in the time measurement, as data acquisition will be carried out in flux, which also will need to be studied for future applications in several areas (biological and clinical analysis, environmental control, beverage analysis,…) (AU)
